The architecture of traditional roofs in Vietnam has the prominent features of shape, structure and material. In different areas, the roofs represent its own characteristics that are appropriate for the culture and climate of it.
In the North Vietnam, the roofing materials used are thatch, straw, palm and tile. The roof framing structure is bamboo structure or wooden structure, tied with bamboo string.

The North roof has large slope to drain rain water off and avoid leaking. The people often utilize the space from large slope to create the storage. The roof is far away from the columns to create the shade and protect the wooden columns and clay wall from rain water.

The roof in Central has two layers: the first clay layer (clay mix straw), the second layer roofed with thatch or tile. The distance of two layers is 40-50 centimeters. The roof is thick enough to insulate, so the house will be always cool under the hot weather in Central.

Rong house has thatched roof with the thickness about 3 centimeters, tied with roofing frame. The roof framing structure is made from many long standing trees. The top of roof is decorated with special patterns.
The trusses are curved, decorated the patterns and images that depict village life and religious beliefs.

In South Vietnam, the main roofing material is nipa leaves. It’s good at insulating, suitable with the tropical weather here. However, every house must change the roof after 3-5 years.
