What’s traditional building material?
There are materials that have been attached to people in ancients times and silently built the lasting works. We often call that is traditional building materials. Architecture has always changed with human’s developement, construction materials have also become more and more richly, but traditional materials still hold irreplaceable position.
Classify traditional building material
Traditional building materials are divided 2 types:
- Traditional building materials are taken directly from nature: pebble, stone, wood, bamboo, mud, straw,…
- Traditional building materials originated from nature, formed by technology such as pottery, ceramics, brick, tile,…

The Swiss famous architect Peter Zumthor, owner of Pritzker Prize 2009 said: “When I start, my first idea for a building is with material. I believe architecture is about that. It’s not about paper, it’s not about form. It’s about space and material”.
Material is the important element to make the architectural features. The traditional materials from nature are always the endless inspiration to create the great constructions.
Stone, pebble, bamboo,… are not as backward as many people thought, these materials put into the modern designs will bring special beauty, it have received the quintessence of the age, as well as expressed national cultural identity.
Especially in green architecture trend today, many people want to build the construction with open space, harmony with nature, so traditional building material is the best choice.
