THE STORY ABOUT THE ROOF IN ARCHITECTURE
The story about the roof in architecture. Roof is the load-bearing structure and also the covering structure of the house. The roof helps to protect people from the rain, sun and the impacts from the nature. In addition, roof is the manifestation of the family reunion, be also the desire of happiness.
The roof is connected to the wall, column, beam, roofing brace of the building, all create the overall stability for the whole building. Roof has the great influence on the landscape. The architectual roof represents the regional and religious culture.
The structure of the roof
- Covering structure: waterproof, anti-leak, protect from rain and sun, heat-insulating, sound-proof, fireproof, anti harmful gas.
- Load-bearing structure: ensure to bear under the impacts of the static load as the load itself, the load of roof and roof’s support structure. Also ensure to bear the influence of wind, rain.
Roof classification
Depending on the structural and shaping techniques, there will be different types of roof.
*** By the form
- Flat roof: The roof is parapell to the ground, with the slight slope, durable structure, high fireproof. We can move, place, manipulate the structures and objects on the flat roof. However, flat roof is easy to change the temperature, easy stangnant rainwater and it doesn’t have as much shaping architectural significance as the pitched roof.
- Pitched roof: Pitched roof with horizontal create the angle. Depending on the type of roofing and roof framing material with the area covered, roof has the different slope. The pitches roof helps the rainwater flows quickly, waterproof, anti-leak. We move, manipulate on the pitched roof is harder than flat roof. Pitched roof contributes to shape the architecture.
- Mansard roof: About the structure, it’s the same as flat roof. However, the slope of 2 sides are different.
- Reinforced concrete roof: The roof is poured all concrete or installed by concrete structures. Reinforced concrete roof has advantage of durability, loading well however it’s difficult to remove or dismantle works.
- Flat frame roof (with bamboo-wood, steel material): The roof uses trusses, wall,… bearing with other layers of textures (depend on roof material). This roof is easy to remove the components. This roof is often used in designing resort.
- Space framework roof: Today, space framework roof is used for the architecture which has large space such as: airport, museum, stadium… Space framework allows to span and it’s flexible in solution combination of frame system as well as the installation, dismantlement, move.
- Specially structural roof: The roofs have thin shell structure, hanging cord,…
- Tile: Tile roof is aesthetic, able to survive with the environment highly. Tile roof reduces the noise, as the heat absorbed, the power consumption. Tile is heavy weight, so it needs the firm structure of trusses, frame, wall and column.
- Tempered glass: Tempered glass roof often incoporated with wood or iron frame to assemble, helps to take the sunlight for the house, saves the energy for lighting. Mái kính cường lực chịu được rung chấn, sức gió và va đập mạnh. Tempered glass roof brings the high aestheticism, create the airy, luxurious space.
- Tole: Tole has light weight so the structure of the frame system to support the tole is very simple. The tole roof often uses the steel trusses frame. Tole roof is installed and dismantled easily, it helps to save the cost and the time. However, tole roof causes heat when the outside temperature is high, causes noise when it rains or has impact force. Tole roof is commonly used for warehouse, factory,…
- Thatched roof: roof frame structure is bamboo structure or wood structure. Thatched roof is light weight, easy to install, it’s airy and cool for the space in the house. However thatched roof is not durable like tile or tole,.. It need changing after 3-5 years of using.
- Other materials: concrete, steel – glass, wood – glass, concrete – tile
- The energy-saving architecture trend: The roof is not as solid as it once was. On the roof is often designed the space wide enough to catch the sun.
- The green architecture trend: The green materials such as wood or bamboo… are used so much to create the fresh air and eco-friendly landscape..
- The unique, creative architecture trend: The roof is increasingly focused on the design to bring harmony between the work and surround natural landscape.
