What is skylight?

Skylight is the architectural solution that has appeared since Ancient Roman architecture, such as the Pantheon work.
Skylight is the space from the the roof to the ground to take light and ventilate naturally for the house. Skylight is both technical and artistic, is the special point for all works.

The location of skylight in architecture

Skylight can be put any location in the house: the center, stairs, dining room, kitchen,.. Depending on the house, the architecture will choose the most suitable location.

The size of skylight in architecture

The space of skylight is often small, with the normal size of 4 – 6m2. The area of skylight and house must be harmonious to create modern and cool space.

The physical size of the skylight greatly affects the illumination level and temperature of the space below. As a rule of thumb, the skylight size should never be more than 5% of the floor area in rooms with many windows and no more than 15% of the room’s total floor area for spaces with few windows.

The shape of skylight in architecture

Skylights are available in a variety of shapes. The most common shapes are: rectangular, circular, oval, diamond, triangular, multi-sided, and tubular.

The structure of skylight in architecture

The structure of skylight consists of 3 parts: the bottom, the middle and the top

  • The bottom of skylight: on the ground floor, used to decorate mini scence, rockery,…
  • The middle of skylight: illuminate for the upper floors.
  • The top of skylight: have glass roof and roof framing system. It can be decorated with roof framing and iron patterns. The top skylight has the ventilation window, it’s directly illuminated to maximize the ventilation and illumination.

Skylight has the roof or not, depend on its location and requirement of owner.

The function of skylight in architecture

  • Increase natural light to house, create the ventilation and brightness to space. A skylight can admit more than three times as much light as a vertical window of the same size.
  • Save power, save cost, reduce the impact on environment. According to U.S. DOE reported, many commercial buildings can reduce total energy costs by up to one-third through the optimal use of daylighting.
  • Get wind, help the airflow circulate better and air conditioning.
  • Provide a visual connection to the outdoor environment to interior occupants, help human life is closer to nature.
  • Increase aestheticism for the work.

Some notes for skylight

  • The surface should be used sound insulation materials.
  • In rainy season, you should calculate logically the cover of roof and drainage system.
  • In sunny season, you should install the curtain celling system under bottom of skylight to shade the sunlight.
