WHY BAMBOO ARCHITECTURES?

Bamboo is one of the most traditional and the oldest material of humanity. The bamboo architectures appear more and more. It’s worther than a place to live, bamboo architectures are considered masterpieces of art.
These are the reasons why today bamboo is used as common building material:

Low cost

In many densely populated areas in the tropics, bamboo is considered a building material to meet the need for economical housing. Because bamboo is durable, cheap and abundant.
While the cost of wood, concrete, iron, steel,… exceeds affordability of people, bamboo architectures have cost-effectively.

Bamboo is planted popularly

Bamboo is planted popularly in almost types of soil. The acreage of bamboo forest in the world is about 37 million hectares. The cost of growing bamboo is not expensive.

Now, the people estimates that bamboo has more than 1600 species, devided into over 100 genera, distributed throughout the word (According to Bamboos of Indochina). Bamboo is grown in the tropics, subtropics, temperate zones such as in South America, Africa, especially South-East-Asia.

Bamboo grows fast

Bamboo is more prominent than other woods because it has ability to develop quickly and high productivity.
While woods possible to be exploited at least 15 years, bamboo can be harvested after 3-5 years.
Every year, woodlands have the growth rate of 2-3%. However, according to David Firelly, the author of The book of bamboo research, bamboo forest grows with the rate of 10-30%/ year.  

Durability

One of the reasons that bamboo is used as building material is its high tensile and good durability. If bamboo is treated well, the life expectancy of bamboo architectures can last a hundred years.

Safety

Bamboo is lighter than other building materials. Therefore, bamboo is easy to transfer to highlands, remote areas or the regions where damaged by natural disasters.
Bamboo has the enormous elasticity, so it’s the best building material for earthquake endangered areas.

According to the report of Gutierez, in 1998, the 7.6 magnitude earthquake in Costa Rica caused many concrete houses and hotels to collapse. However, 30 bamboo houses in the epicenter of the earthquake were still intact.

Build fast

The bamboo houses take less time to assemble. This is very important to help people in disasters, help them to rehabilitate their houses and livings.

Bamboo architectures bring cool

Bamboo material helps to reduce the heat of buildings. For the hot climate in Viet Nam, living in bamboo houses will make you feel more comfortable and cooler.
Currently in China, most people prefer living in bamboo houses. Officials in Zhejiang province also encourage architects to design bamboo infrastructures.

Protect environment

Bamboo is eco-friendly material, it also saves energy. Some studies has shown that bamboo processing only requires ⅓ the energy of wood processing, ⅛ energy of concrete processing, and 1/50 the energy of steel processing. (Source)
In addition, using bamboo also helps to reduce deforestation. Because after harvesting, bamboo will regenerate itself without planting new trees.
